President's Report

Steve Moksnes

As president of OrphanAct I am focused on one thing this spring.  We at OrphanAct have decided that the best way to help children is to do it one orphanage (or children’s facility) at a time.  To do this we are developing the concept of a support team called the OrphanAct International Children’s Action Team (CAT or ICAT).  Last month’s newsletter told you that we had 11 OrphanAct Presenters who were each linked to a specific children’s facility in Russia.  How am I personally helping to develop this new team-linked-to-facility focus?

On the local level, I am the co-leader of a OrphanAct Children’s Action Team (CAT) linked to Shelter #2 (for homeless children) in Irkutsk, Russia.  We now have six Maui Rotary Clubs on this team.  Each Maui club has contributed $300 to become a Facility Sponsor for Shelter #2.  In addition iOrphan, a non-profit working in Russia, has also become a Facility Sponsor.  That means the Shelter has over $2000 to spend this year for the good of the children.  Lida Sclocchini, the co-leader of this team will be working with Irina Bogdanova, director of Shelter #2, to find ways to spend this money.  To see the Shelter #2 web page click on:  http://orphanact.clubwizard.com/Irkutsk8.cfm.  To see the Children’s Action Team linked to Shelter #2 click on: http://orphanact.clubwizard.com/Irkutsk8CAT.cfm.

We have twelve OrphanAct Presenters linked to specific children’s facilities in Russia.  A list of those presenters is in last month’s newsletter.  My second focus is to support these volunteer presenters to insure their success.  I try to stay in email contact with these presenters on a weekly basis.  Recently one of our major donors decided to give each presenter $1000 to start the funding process for each Children’s Action Team that these presenters are forming.  This is to encourage each presenter to contact their Russian counterpart and start discussing possible projects to fund.

Last, I am focused on preparing for the R.I. Convention where OrphanAct will have a booth.  We are making final decisions about new literature and booth graphics.  This year our booth will be twice as large to accommodate the addition of three new countries (Egypt, Philippines and Uganda).  Our main theme will be the International Children’s Action Team as a way to help children-in-need.   Please drop by our booth and introduce yourself.

In March,  we introduced OrphanAct Philippines www.orphanactphilippines.org.   We are seeking volunteers that would be interested in being on a CAT team for the Philippines.  Please contact Leanna Roberts at leannaroberts@cs.com to get started helping the children of the Philippines.

Rotary International Convention

Thank you to all who have volunteered to work the OrphanAct booth at the upcoming Rotary International Convention in Los Angeles California.  We are still seeking volunteers to help work in the booth. Please contact Leanna Roberts to schedule your time: leannaroberts@cs.com.

Sweet Dreams Project Funded

The Rotary Club of Jerseyville, IL

Many thanks to the Rotary Club of Jerseyville Illinois USA that has funded the replacement of dilapidated bedding at the Rebrikha Corrective School-Orphanage in Rebrinkha.  The Rotary Club of Barnaul and their adjunct Rotaract Club work very closely with this facilty.  The OrphanAct team visited Rebrikha last June and enjoyed meeting the children and the dedicated stafff.

Plan now to visit our booth at the Rotary International Convention.  See you there!
