UNICEF estimates that are over140 million orphans worldwide. Orphans may be in a situation where one or more of the child's parents are deceased. Orphans may have parents and at times an orphan may have visits from a parent or other relative that lives in the area. Sometimes the court system has taken the children away from the parents because of crime or drug use. At other times the children or babies are dropped at the hospital or orphanage steps because the parents can simply not afford to keep the child. At other times the children are picked up off the streets of the city.
The current work of OrphanAct is focused on orphans in Russia, the Philippines, and Romania.
OrphanAct's pilot program, OrphanAct Russia, has been working in Siberia since 2003.
